Healthy soil is the basis of healthy plants and a healthy environment. When garden soil is in good shape there is less need for fertilizers or pesticides. As author and respected gardener Frank Tozer writes, “When building soil you not only improve your plants health, but you can also improve your own.”

Quality soil helps plants establish a healthy root system and develop abundant foliage, which leads to an attractive and productive garden. Plants benefit from moist soil with adequate nutrient levels and good structure. Rich soil contains the primary plant nutrients of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium along with a host of minor nutrients that help fuel plant growth. Decaying organic matter and minerals within the soil provide these nutrients. Soil that doesn’t contain sufficient nutrients requires fertilizer to add the nutrients needed by the specific plants grown in the soil. Adding organic matter in the form of compost and aged manure, or using mulch or growing cover crops (green manures), is the best way to prepare soil for planting. Adding chemical fertilizers will replenish certain nutrients.

Some gardeners do not say that they garden, but rather that they work the soil. This reveals an understanding that good soil conditions are essential to support productive plant growth.
